Malcolm (I'm having a heart attack) Rusby and Shaun assisted throughout the day and there acting skills were of a BAFTA award winning quality. Paul took Rob for the Navigation, Search and Recovery and Peak Performance Buoyancy dives for his Advanced course. An early start and I mean early. At 3.30am I picked Shaun up for the drive up to Stoney Cove. We made good time on the quiet roads and were there and in the queue for the bottom car park before 5.30. At7am the staff let us into the bottom carpark and the wait began for the others to arrive. Rob was completing his Advanced course while Peter, Howard and David dived with Enriched Air for the first time. Also diving were Ross, Mandy, Wendy, Phillipa, Paul, Liz and Arne. Rob, Peter, Howard, David and Ross came with me for the first dive down to 30 metres. The visibility was still quite good and there were a lot of fish to see. The new Armoured vehicle is a welcome additon to the site and is atracting the fish already. Shaun, Wendy, Mandy, Phillipa and Arne also dived as a group starting off with a look at the Stanegarth. After a bacon sandwich it was time to dive again. We explored the Stanegarth while Shaun visited the Wessex helicopter with Arne. A good days diving with a wind down in the pub before the drive back. Arne (I know north London!) made the trip back more of an adventure but I have to admit he did know what he was talking about. 8 JuneA night of Rescue practise..unconsciuos bodies everywhere and a fair amount of amusement in the pool. Wendy, Peter and Trevor prectised their Rescue skills in preperation for their qualifying dives at the weekend. The next day she sent me one of the most complimentary emails about an instructor we have received so Whales will be joining our staff. 4 -5 JuneAll boys!! It's a long time since we had a class consisting of all boys. Usually the class is 50:50 or more women than men. Ian, Luke, Craig and Matt put aside their disappointment and got stuck into the Open Water Referral scuba diving course with relish. They were all extremely comfortable in the water with superb buoyancy. New Zealander Adam(Whales) helped out after years working for Cairn Dive Centre, the biggest PADI scuba diving school in Australia. On the Sunday they were joined by Karl who is already a Scuba Diver but wants to complete the full Open Water course in the Red Sea. David Sketchley returned from Sweden to lend a hand. Arne acted as assisstant and was unsuccessfully drowned several times while Dave looked on. Afterwards we joined Caroline and Mandy at The Putney Paige for a quite beer and a chat about the Dahab holiday. Mandy has decided we need to organise a trip to the Maldives for next year. Stuart is off to Egypt on Holiday while Louis will continue to dive with us and also asked when he could start his Advanced course. 4 MayTonight a lot of our Open Water Referral students came along to practise before their qualifying dives in the UK, in Dahab with Dive Wimbledon or abroad on their own holidays including Louis, Louise, Maddy, Sheryl, David, Onur and Arne. Ancheline completed a refresher with Duncan. 30 April - 1 MayScuba diving is associated with warmer weather and we do start to get busier!!! This weekend we had 6 students for the PADI Open Water Referral course. They were all really good in the water and a pleasure to teach. Congratulations to Stuart Taggart, Azita Qadri, Ian Bullock, Laura Towers and Sean Ramsey. Good luck with your qualifying dives in Egypt!! Stuart will be completing his Open Water scuba dives with Dive Wimbledon at Wraysbury next weekend. Onur was also completing the course but missed a bit of the theory so will be completing that this Wednesday evening. On Saturday Andy and Arne played in the pool again. On Sunday Marion, Andrew and their son Angus completed a Discover Scuba Diving course with Bob Millar. Kiwi Cherie Finlay completed a pool refresher with Dave while ex- Referral students Jill and Phil had a practise . 27 AprilClub night at Putney: It was a very quiet night at the pool. Chelsea was playing Liverpool so we weren't surprised. John and Paul practised while Louis completed his PADI Open Water Referral course. 23 AprilSaturday night was a busy night at the pool with lots of different courses going on. Andy supervised his wife Lesley and her daughter Gemma as they completed a Discover Scuba Diving session. Gemma is a natural in the water and I think she will be back again and again. Colin and Jesper had a pool refresher with Nathan Lowe while Andy Sirrel and Peter Seed played in the pool. Sheryl Mackenzie and DavieBrunton were back again to purchase some new equipment and try it out in the pool. They both completed the PADI Referral course with us several weeks before and had a practise while Roger kept an eye on them. We went to the pub afterwards for a couple and I think we may have a few more divers booking onto our scuba diving holiday to Marsa Alam in September. 20 AprilA very relaxing night at the pool. Louis completed most of the remaining skills from his Referral course with Roger while Ian, Petrea and Arne practised. Petrea completed her course with us at the weekend and took advantage of the cheap practise sessions we offer to our students. By the end of the night she was looking very comfortable under the water and I am sure whe will get complimented by the Instructor on Tioman Island in Malaysia when she completes her qualifying dives. We pride ourselves on the quality of our teaching and are thrilled when students come back to practise and fine tune their scuba diving skills. Have a great holiday Petrea and Ian!!
16 - 17 AprilFrom 7 to mid 50's. That was the range of ages we had this weekend and the oldest was one of the best. Congratulations to Petrea, Jill, Phil, Justine(alias Ms Two-Suits), James and Chris who all passed their PADI Referral course this weekend. All of them did really well and they all did far better than they expected too. The theory was easy for all of them but there were a few problems in the pool on the first night. On Sunday we started off in the 31 degree training pool and suddenly everything came together. By the end of the night everybody was scuba diving around in the 4 metre deep diving pit and looking very comfortable. I am sure they will all go away with confidence to complete their courses overseas. Aussie Petrea is off to Malaysia with her husband Ian who completed a pool refresher with Shaun Gallop on Saturday evening. Justine is off to Egypt with Caroline, as are Jill and Phil. James will be coming to Dahab with us in 3 1/2 weeks and has decided to complete the Advanced course out there as well. John hadn't dived for 4 years since his Advanced diving course in Airlie Beach in Australia so was a little rusty but it all came back and he spent the last 20 minutes laying with the toypedo on the bottom of the diving pit. John Ward practised with his new kit and hopes to come back on a regular basis. 2 - 3 AprilAnother successful weekend of scuba diving at Putney Leisure Centre. The PADI Open Water Referral course took place over both days as usual. Kiwis Sheryl Mackenzie and Dave Brunton and English Maddy Hayes were our newest students. They all did really well with all the theory and pool skills. Their buoyancy was particularly good and by the end of Sunday night they were all extremely comfortable in the water. Well done guys. Sheryl and Dave are off to the Maldives to complete their course(lucky them) while Maddy will be coming to the Red Sea with Dive Wimbledon to complete her course. Rob Greenwood and his wife Jo brought their daughter Georgia and her friend David along to complete the Bubblemaker scuba diving course. The kids loved it and the digital camera captured it all. I wish I'd had a chance to try scuba when I was 9!!!! Peter Seed brought his daughter and friend along to snorkel while he practised and played again. Arne and Victor played again while Richard and his girlfriend Sarah practised their skills. On the Sunday Arne and Louise practised and we all went to the pub afterwards for a quiet drink. The only down side was they were out of crisps!! 30 March
Wendy, Peter and Mandy all comfortably passed their exams before having to rush back to Kingston, so well done to them. In the pool Jason and Tim practised the Unconscious Diver on the surface exercise until it almost became second nature. Jonty completed his Rescue assessment for the Dive Master course while Jo Draper assisted and completed the last exercise for her PADI Divemaster course. Well done Jo!!! It was Jo's last night at the pool for at least a year as she is heading off to live in New Zealand for a year. Have a great time Jo. We'll miss you! 19 - 20 MarchThe summerlike weather had an effect because everybody wanted to come scuba diving again. We had one of the most enthusiatic Open Water Referral courses with Oliver Whittle, Vicky Garrow and Moira Bennett being team taught by Roger and Nathan. They all did briliantly in their exams and picked the water skills up as if born to it. Mandy. Peter and Wendy practised their Rescue skills and in particular their compass search patterns, while Leigh had a drysuit orientatation. Louise and Arne practised together which was ideal as they are both coming to Dahab in May for the holiday. Oskar completed his Referral course with us last year and returned for a refresher before his next diving holiday. It was good to see his smiling face again. Kavita and Andy came down to say thanks for their Referral a month before and to let us know they successfully completed their Open Water dives in Dubai. They plan to complete the Advanced with us later in the year. Next stop for them is Hawaii for their honeymoon!! Good luck with the wedding!! On Sunday the Referral students completed their session while Guy completed a PADI Scuba Tune Up. He thought he last dived 4 years ago but realised it was closer to 10!!! But it all came back to him and he's ready for his honeymoon diving with Vicky from the Referral course. Where are they going? Nobody knows..it's a surprise for Vicky. James, Paul and Liz practised and played. 13 MarchBob Millar conducted the Emergency First Response course for 4 students including Andy Cooper, Judy Sands, Peter Seed and Jason Amy. The mannikan was well and truly saved!! In the evening Peter, Wendy, Mandy and Trevor continued the Rescue diver course with the Unconscious diver on the surface exercise. Afterwards we relaxed infront of the fire at the Putney Paige with a quiet beer. A perfect end to the weekend. 5 - 6 MarchNathan taught Steven Bennett, Oliver McComb and James Sayers the theory and pool skills required for the PADI Open Water Referral course while Roger, Jo Draper and Leigh Boccius practised their Rescue skills. On the Sunday Nathan completed the Referral course and everybody passed with flying colours. Julie Gazzola tried a Discover Scuba Diving session with Bob Millar and will be diving in Dahab in May. 2 MarchAnother Rescue Diver evening at the pool. Tonight we completed the Response from shore to Paniced or Tired Diver with much hilarity. This was followed by the Distressed Diver Underwater exercise and Surfacing the Unconscious Diver. Great fun but yet again we played until we were to late to make it to the pub. 23 FebruaryPADI have very recently introduced a new Rescue Diver course and this was the first time Dive Wimbledon has run it. Taking the course were Wendy Mauchline, Amanda Sharp, Jason Amy, Tim Drew, Trevor Longhurst, Leigh Boccius and 'Can't keep him away' Peter. The PADI Rescue Diver course has always been the most popular scuba diving course of them all and after the changes it has got even better. The Tired and Panicked Diver exercises soon became more difficult throwing up unexpected and entertaining possible scenarios. A lot of water was drunk as the scenarios got more and more realisitic as each person tried to outdo their buddy, though it could have been because everybody was laughing so hard. Trevor's tired deaf/ mute diver made everybody think! The only disappointment of the evening was when everybody realised we had gone on so late we wouldn't make it to the pub before closing time. Thanks to Andy for all his help!! 19-20 FebruaryThis weekend saw Kavita Dhall, Andy Binks, Patrick Gallagher, Claire Perrin and Louise Heals all successfully pass their PADI Open Water Referral course. Louise Heals enjoyed it so much that she decided to join us on our May trip to Dahab to complete the Open Water dives. Saturday also saw the regulars; Arne, Chris and Katy practising with newcomer Karl Stillman. Sunday night : Jane completed a refresher for Mark and his friend Carl while Nathan introduced Matty to the underwater world through a Discover Scuba Diving session. 5-6 FebruaryThis weekend we had a variety of courses taking place at Putney Leisure Centre as well as club members having a splash. Saturday 5 February Quite a quiet night but a few of our Divemasters in training came along for a practical skill session. Jo Draper acheived her aim of successfully practising her mask clearing every time she went under water and found the 'equipment exchange while buddy breathing' to be far easier than she expected. Congratulations to Jo. A couple more pool sessions and she will be qualified as a PADI Divemaster. Peter Seed, his daughter and a friend played with the toypedos all night. Not for the first time!! Sunday 6 February - Putney Scuba Diving A very busy night with a lot going on. Hanzada Zohdi, Vicky Briscoe and Jan successfully completed their PADI Discover Scuba Diving course with Instructor Bob Millar. Congratulations go to them. It won't be long before we see them back for their PADI Open Water course. Claire Mogford completed her PADI Scuba Tune up with Roger before heading off to Australia to dive in Sydney. David Marshall completed a pool refresher with Divemaster Shaun Gallop. Everything came back to him quickly so he will also be heading off to Aus with confidence. Wendy Mauchline, Jonty Katz, Katy Baron, Arne Ruitenburg, Malcolm Rusby and the ever keen Emma Rusby(aged 13) played and practised in the 4 metre deep diving pit. The pub afterwards was as popular as ever. Jonty decided to sign up for his Divemaster course while Wendy signed up for the Rescue Course. Nobody embarrassed themselves!
